Microsoft Ends Support for Office 2016 (and Older)

🛑 It’s Not Just Windows 10 Anymore

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will also end support for Office 2016 and all older versions (2013, 2010, 2007, etc.).

Your programs like Word, Excel, and Outlook will still open after that date, but here’s the catch:

  • No more security updates or bug fixes will be provided.

  • Hackers can exploit security holes — and Microsoft won’t patch them.

  • Newer file formats may not open properly.

  • Some helpful features (like dictation and read-aloud) will stop working in early 2026.

Think of it like driving a car that still runs but never gets new safety checks or replacement parts. It works, but it’s unsafe and unreliable.

⚠️ Why This Matters

  • Unsupported Office versions leave your documents and email vulnerable to cyberattacks.

  • Compatibility issues may appear with newer file types (someone may send you a Word document that your old Office can’t open).

  • Outdated Office programs can lose features you rely on — and Microsoft won’t fix them.

💸 Why Microsoft Is Doing This

In the past, Office versions were supported for 10 years. Now, Microsoft often limits support to as little as 5 years, likely to push more users into subscriptions like Microsoft 365.

This reflects a bigger industry trend:

  • Microsoft 365 = subscription model (recurring yearly payments).

  • QuickBooks and other companies = raising prices on older desktop software to force customers online.

✅ What You Can Do Next

You don’t have to wait until your Office stops being safe. Here are your options:

1.  Switch to Microsoft 365 (Subscription)

  • Always get the latest Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Includes cloud storage and works across all your devices.

  • $99/year for one user (up to 5 devices).

  • $129/year for families (up to 6 users, 5 devices each).

  • Best for households or businesses with multiple computers.

2. Buy a One-Time License (No Subscription)

If you don’t like paying yearly fees, I can set you up with a one-time license. As an authorized Microsoft reseller, I can provide:

  • Office 2021 Professional Plus – Includes Publisher and Access. $200 one-time.

  • Office 2024 Professional Plus – The newest release, $250 one-time. (Note: Publisher and Access are not included in this version.)

Both come with full installation and setup by me.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using Office 2016 after support ends?

Yes, but it’s not safe. Without updates, it becomes vulnerable to hackers, and some features will eventually stop working.

Will my old files still open?

Yes, your documents, spreadsheets, and emails will still open — but you may run into compatibility problems with newer file types in the future.

Do I need to switch to Microsoft 365?

Not necessarily. Microsoft 365 is great if you want the newest features and updates automatically, but if you prefer a one-time purchase, I can set you up with Office 2021 or Office 2024 instead.

What’s the difference between Office 2021 and Office 2024?

  • Office 2021 includes Publisher and Access (programs some people still use).

  • Office 2024 is the newest release, but leaves out Publisher and Access.

Can you install the new version for me?

Yes — I’ll handle the setup, transfer your files, and make sure everything runs smoothly.

💡 Bottom Line

If you’re still using Office 2016 or older, now is the time to plan your next step. Waiting puts your documents, emails, and privacy at risk.

👉 Don’t wait for problems to hit — let’s get you upgraded safely and smoothly before support ends.
